Your searches

Who sees a search

In the preview there is no registrar and no prices. To say whether a name is already registered, our server asks each extension's registry through its public RDAP service: Verisign for .com, Google Registry for .dev and .app, and Identity Digital for .ai, .io and .studio. Those registries see the name you typed and our server's address, not yours. Where sales are switched on, checking whether a name is free sends it to our registrar partner (planned: Tucows, through OpenSRS), which asks the registry. They see the name. Your internet provider's resolver can see lookups too. We cannot promise what they do with it; we can promise what we do.

How we check availability

We check a name only after you stop typing. Where sales are switched on, we check only through our registrar's own availability check; each visitor and each account has a limit per hour, and the whole service has a daily ceiling. In the preview, a search asks each registry's public RDAP service at most once per extension, and only whether the name is registered: an answer of "registered" shows the name as taken, "not found" shows it as looking unregistered, and anything else as "couldn't check". Each network has a limit per minute and per hour, and each of our servers has a daily ceiling. We do not send your searches to public WHOIS or RDAP services in bulk; their terms forbid high-volume automated use, and we respect that.
