.io registry terms
Draft for the preview. Counsel has not approved this text. It is replaced before anything is sold.
The registry's rules
.io is a country-code extension outside ICANN's policies. It follows the registry's own terms at nic.io: its own dispute policy under English courts, no sexual or pornographic use, and at least two nameservers. The registry may deactivate a name. We are not the registry's agent.
No refunds
A .io registration cannot be refunded once it is registered.
The future of .io
.io is the code of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The United Kingdom and Mauritius signed a treaty about the Chagos Archipelago in May 2025 that is not in force. If the extension were ever retired, the usual transition lasts five years and at most ten. We cannot promise how the question ends.
Transfer codes
A .io transfer code is set by our registrar's support team, not instantly. We ask for it when you do and send it within five calendar days.
